Adult Scoliosis

Adult scoliosis is more prevalent than in adolescents, with rates as high as 20%. Unmonitored curves can progress, leading to future complications. Adults with scoliosis face increased risk of pain and disability. There are two main types: adult idiopathic scoliosis and adult degenerative scoliosis. Scoliosis can also develop in adults due to disease, surgery, or trauma, although less common. Treatment options include observation, pain management, or invasive spinal surgery.

Types of Adult Scoliosis

The 3 P’s (puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopause) are all life stages where scoliosis either develops or progresses. It’s no coincidence that 2 of these 3 stages are during adulthood, and the incidence of scoliosis increases throughout the lifespan, from a low of 2-3% in adolescence to over 68% of adults over age 60. For these reasons, there are essentially 2 types of adult scoliosis:

  1. Adult Idiopathic Scoliosis with an adolescent onset: This form of adult scoliosis is actually adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, with the only difference being that the patient is presenting for care as an adult. In many of these cases, the patients were told that their curves weren’t bad enough to treat when they were teens, but years later their curves progress to the point that chronic pain and other impacts on daily activity occur.
  2. Adult Degenerative (de Novo) Scoliosis: This type of adult scoliosis occurs later in life either during pregnancies or perimenopause, where spinal degenerative changes, hormone changes, and/or bone density changes can create a new scoliosis curvature.

Symptoms and Health Issues

Severe scoliosis can cause various symptoms and health issues, which may include:

  1. Visible Curvature: The spine may appear visibly curved, leading to an abnormal posture or asymmetry in the shoulders, hips, or rib cage.
  2. Back Pain: Severe scoliosis can cause back pain, particularly in the affected area of the spine and hip.
  3. Respiratory Problems: In many cases, the abnormal spinal curvature can restrict the space available for the lungs to expand, potentially leading to breathing difficulties.
  4. Limited Mobility: Severe scoliosis can affect mobility and flexibility, making it challenging to perform everyday activities comfortably.
  5. Digestive Issues: In many cases, moderate and severe spinal curvatures may affect the position and function of the organs in the abdomen, leading to digestive problems.
  6. Psychological Impact: Living with severe scoliosis can have emotional and psychological effects due to self-consciousness or body image concerns.
